Big Air take 2: BUDS

British Universities Dry Slope at Hillend. Another chance to shoot “big air”. I think I need another strobe! After not being terribly impressed by my images last week, I went back to try some different angles. I chose to shoot from the backboard with a 70-200mm to get a sense of the event. I wanted my flash higher than last week so I could get more faces and less toasted skis/snowboards. Unfortunately it was a compromise between height and stability as strong winds rolled over Hillend. In the end I was happy with my results for a single strobe. Imagine the above with fill from another flash on the left! Identifying a subject is important and for newspaper printing having them highlighted avoids the murky print shadows. The highlights on the snowboarder are OK but the shadows are harsh and point neatly back to the light source.
