A little continuity3

James looking badass
I have been playing with lightweight but powerful continuous light sources to mix with ambient light and put highlights where I want them. This is only the start, and I’ve yet to use them in anger on a “serious” shoot, but there is potential. The lights I use are waterproof (although if you wedge one in your mouth and drool on it a lot it’ll turn of for a minute) rugged, lightweight and powerful, plus they don’t require triggering!
The above images were made with the torchlight on my Sony phone in the Porterhouse in London. Its a good bit more low key than firing off flashes everywhere and very easy to mix with the existing light. My parents would have strangled me if I’d tried this shoot with flashes, especially when making this image. As it was I managed to beg a quick reshoot as my Mum’s handbag-torch was pointed a little off. The takeaway from all this is you might have some very directional light in your pocket.

Low noise/high ISO coupled to a fast lens is making it possible to record some things that have’nt been done well before. Like my friends in the hills at night.
